Local residents of Palm Harbor, Florida can be proud of their newest firefighter. Very soon, a true fighter named Ruby will join our firestation and keep us safe! Ruby had a will to live after surviving a horrifying house fire in Georgia. At just a few months of age, Ruby was injured and cared for by her owner and another dog. A sudden fire broke out that claimed both of their lives.
After the deadly blaze, residents returned to go through their burnt belongings a couple days later. Ruby emerged out of the burned remains and was in bad shape. She was rushed to the nearby emergency vet for third-degree burns that she suffered when she ran THROUGH the fire to escape!
Through long trials and tribulations, Ruby’s path brought her to the Suncoast Animal League in Palm Harbor, where she has been living for the last few months. Her foster mom, Karey, brought Ruby into the local firestation to meet everyone and it was love at first sight.
After winning over all of the hearts and minds at the station, Palm Harbor Fire Rescue decided that they will officially adopt Ruby. On September 12th, it was decided unanimously that she will be sworn in during a ceremony on October 12. Ruby will even get her own fire department badge so that she will be able to help with educating the public on fire prevention and safety from Station 65!
Department Spokesperson Elizabeth Graham explained, “She already knows how to stop, drop and roll and we’ve been teaching her to crawl low under smoke. She’s a part of the family now and I can’t wait to see how many lives she will touch, she’s a survivor.” Monetary donations to support Ruby are being collected at Station 65, located at 250 West Lake Road. It will support her care, medical bills and funding for a large fenced-in area for her to train in.
